Abstract

At the beginning of Republic 6 (484c–487a), Socrates argues that, thanks to their passion for knowledge, the philosopher-guardians must have at least eight of what might conventionally be called “virtues.” This list overlaps closely with virtue-lists in Plato’s Meno and Aristotle’s Rhetoric and shares important features with lists in Cratylus and Definitions. The question motivating this paper concerns the relation between this Book 6 list and the world-historically influential one at Republic 4 (427e). There Socrates gains Glaucon’s assent that goodness has exactly four exclusive parts or aspects (later referred to as “virtues”) – sophia, andreia, sôphrosunê, and dikaiosunê. This is evidently the source of the familiar idea that Plato believes there are precisely these four cardinal virtues. But Socrates does not argue for this substantive, surprisingly, odd, and dialectically strategic position. And in no other dialogue – or, as I show, elsewhere in Republic – does Socrates justify or even insist on this position. (Aristotle, for his part, does not ascribe this virtue tetrad to Plato, or to anyone.) Accordingly, the beginning of Republic 6 prompts reconsideration of a long-ascribed dogma of Plato and a central doctrine of the Republic: that there are four cardinal virtues.
