Abstract
I will argue that the axiomatization of geometry had an impact on Plato’s conception of knowledge and his conception of dialectic. Plato’s dialectic starts from the principles of mathematics and aims to reduce them to the fewest possible, and finally to only one non-hypothetical first principle. Dialectic is a method that employs hypotheses and proceeds in two ways: firstly, a way upwards (or backwards) towards the premises of the argument or towards prior questions. Dialectic proceeds by ‘destroying’ the hypotheses in the sense that it ‘destroys’ their hypothetical character. Secondly, there is a way downwards from the premises (or principles) to the desired conclusion. The upward way is a heuristic process, while the downward one is demonstrative.
The dialectical method is an evolution or improvement of the hypothetical method in the Meno and the Phaedo. I argue that these accounts of Plato’s method reflect the evolution of the reductive method of Hippocrates of Chios (apagoge) into the geometrical method of analysis and synthesis.
