Reflected Forms
Plato. Paired with Andy Warhol's screenprint style, since his fascination with the degradation of the image through screenprinting echoes Plato's analysis of the forms as imperfectly reflected in the material world.

A Short Description of the Laboratory

The Sector of Philosophy of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina decided (conference no. 81/27-9-1988) to duly propose, in accordance with the research and teaching interests of its members, the establishment of an Academic Research Institute under the name: Laboratory for the Documentation and Study of the History of Social and Political Ideas. The relevant proposal was accepted by the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology (conference no. 699/17-1-1989) and by the Senate of our Institution (conference no. 672/23-2-1989) and forwarded to the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs (3-3-1989). Since then, the Laboratory operated “informally” and promoted its objectives at a satisfactory rate, until its formal establishment (24.7.2001) under the direction of Professor (at the time) (and currently Professor Emeritus) Panagiotis Noutsos, in accordance with a decision of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology (conference no. 241/12-2-2003).

In 2017, Assistant Professor Iordanis Marcoulatos was elected Director of the Laboratory for the Documentation and Study of the History of Social and Political Ideas (Government Gazette 724/29.12.2017).

In 2020, Associate Professor Konstantinos Rantis was elected Director of the Laboratory for the Documentation and Study of the History of Social and Political Ideas (Government Gazette 1010/Y.O.D.D./03.12.2020).

Research activity

The Laboratory for the Documentation and Study of the History of Social and Political Ideas constitutes an integral part of the cycle of graduate study and research in Social and Political Philosophy, as cultivated by the Department of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina, in collaboration with allied Departments and corresponding Research Centers abroad (for instance, the International Institut voor Sociale Geschiedenis, in Amsterdam). More specifically, it pursues the indexing and codification of informational units regarding the history of social and political ideas, the establishment of a corresponding specialized library, and the preservation of archival material belonging to (and/or concerning) specific individuals or collective movements.

Infrastructure

Two separate spaces which contain rare books and manuscripts.

Services to third parties

In the context of undertaking research programs of a historiographical nature, expert monographs are being composed, regarding issues that emerge in the course of development of social and political ideas, in our country as well as abroad, thus creating a fertile environment for the further advancement of the graduate-studies program of our Department.
