History

The Department of Philosophy evolved from the former Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology. According to Law 1268/1962 and issuance of P.D. 445/1984, which ruled the division of the School of Philosophy in the three autonomous and equal Departments of Philosophy, History and Archaeology, the department of Philosophy functions as an independent academic unit within the School of Philosophy at the University of Ioannina. Specifically, as far as the evolution of the former Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology is concerned, article 6 of Law 4559/3.8.2018 states: “From the academic year 2019-2020 the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology of the School of Philosophy at the University of Ioannina is renamed to Department of Philosophy.” The Department of Philosophy grants a degree which is considered for all purposes equivalent to the degree of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology. Until The Department will start operating and its first students in the academic year 2019-2020. The Department will be managed by the administrative bodies of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology, while the Professional Services (Secreteriat) will provided administrative and secretarial support. Professional Services are organized and operate at the Department level, in accordance with the meaning of case a’ of par. 2 of article 54 of Law 4178/2013 (A’ 174). As far as the professional rights of the Department’s graduates are concerned, they are included in the field PE02 Philology of par. 2 of article 29 of Law 4521/2018 (A’ 38).

With regards to the integration process of the students of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology in the new Department: According to par. 10 of the aforementioned article, any students who have been admitted to the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology during the academic years 2016-2017, 2017-2018 and any students to register during the academic year 2018-2019, join the two Departments as follows: a) any students of the Philosophy and Pedagogy majors who have been admitted during the academic year 2016-2017 automatically join the Department of Philosophy, b) any students of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology who have been admitted during the academic year 2017-2018 and any students who are admitted in the academic year 2018-2019 may join any of the two Departments after submitting a declaration of preference and a corresponding decision of the Senate of the Institution, and, c) any students who have been admitted up to the academic year 2015-2016 and any students of par. 10 who do not submit a declaration of preference have the right to remain in the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology and complete its programme of studies. The educational function of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology continues continues to operate until the graduation of all students in it, while the administration bodies of the Department of Philosophy are responsible for the completion of the programme of studies of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology and for any related functions. Par. 10 of Law 4559 was replaced by way of a recent amendment (4589/2019, article 80) as follows: Students who have been admitted to the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology during the academic years 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018, as well as any students who register during the academic year 2018-2019, join either the Departments of Philosophy or the Department of Psychology as follows: a) Students of Philosophy and Pedagogy, who have been admitted in the academic years 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, automatically join the Department of Philosophy. b) Students of the Psychology major, who have been admitted in the academic years 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, as well as any students of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology who have been admitted in the academic year 2017-2018 and any students who are admitted in the academic year 2018-2019 may join any of the two Departments, after submitting a declaration of preference and a corresponding decision of the Senate. The declaration shall be submitted within a deadline to be specified by a decision of the Senate and cannot be revoked. Moreover, according to the aforementioned recent amendment and with regards to the first paragraph of par. 11 of article 6 of Law 4559/2018, the term “up to the academic year 2015-2016” is replaced by the term “up to the academic year 2013-2014”.
