Iordanis Marcoulatos is an Associate Professor of Social and Political Philosophy, Contemporary Philosophy with an emphasis on Social Ontology, at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina. He graduated from the Department of Philosophy, Education and Psychology of the University of Ioannina in 1991 with a major in philosophy, and completed his graduate studies in philosophy in 1999 at the Department of Philosophy of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The title of his dissertation was “Intentionality and Social Ontology: non-representational intentionality as a constitutive aspect of social reality”. Subsequently, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Sociology of Temple University. He has taught philosophy at Drexel University and LaSalle University in the Philadelphia area, as well as at the University of Patras, and has been teaching at the University of Ioannina since 2006. His work focuses on the elaboration of ontological issues arising at the theoretically fertile space between contemporary philosophy and the social sciences. In particular, he attempts to pinpoint the ways in which human corporeality, inextricably intertwined with its objective conditions of existence, are not simply granted (so to speak) the meanings they happen to attain, through the intellectual initiative of social agents, but rather constitute the elemental ground of emergence, further elaboration, and largely unintended diffusion, of forms of [social] meaning. He has published two books (in Greek) and a number of related articles, all pertaining to the above nuclear theoretical concern.
